The Victoria-Vancouver hockey rivalry will renew this weekend — but with a historical twist.

Many Lower Mainlanders, who wear the popular retro 1915 Vancouver Millionaires jerseys, are surprised to learn that wasn’t the last B.C. team to win the Stanley Cup. They have been set straight this year with the centenary celebrations of the Victoria Cougars’ 1925 Stanley Cup championship, which will appropriately conclude with a Victoria-Vancouver match-up.

A banner 100 years in the making — commemorating the Cougars 1925 Stanley Cup victory over the Montreal Canadiens — will be hoisted to the rafters before Saturday evening’s Western Hockey League game between the Victoria Royals and Vancouver Giants at Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre.
