The puck dropped Thursday on a celebration 100 years in the making. Noted hockey executive Brian Burke and former heavyweight-champion Victoria Cougar Archie Henderson, from the edgier era of WHL junior, talked about matters hockey during a hotstove session at the Bard and Banker.
And the three finalists in the official song competition belted out their offerings in the hopes of becoming the soundtrack of the centenary celebrations of the Victoria Cougars winning the 1925 Stanley Cup. The winner, who also got $5,000 for first prize, was the duo of Gareth Hurwood and Paul Gatien for their original composition Cougars’ Mighty Roar.
Earlier in the day, across town at the Delta Ocean Pointe, Greater Victoria was officially designated a Sports Heritage Community to become only the second region to receive the designation from the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame after Kamloops, which bills itself as the Tournament Capital of Canada.
